A Window to the Past
I was aksed to be the "keynote" speaker at the Family HIstory Seminar held in our stake in 2010.  I guess I was asked because of my music, because I am surely no expert in the field of genealogy.  I am, however, fascinated with things from the past, and feel that those that went before us have certainly helped pave our way.  We owe them a great debt of gratitude.
As part of my presentation, I decided I would try to create a song that went with their theme.  This song is the result.  It amazed me how this one quickly came together.  There were some struggles as I prepared it, and I was afraid that the end product might not work, but when I arrived at the end I was very satisfied with the result.

A whispered voice, almost missed
The presentation went very well. I spoke for a little while (I referred to a story found in the July 2009 Ensign entitled "Daddy, Do Not Leave Me Here") and then performed this song together as kind of a medley with a couple of others of my songs (Stroll Thru Yesterday and The House on the Hill). I was grateful for the opportunity and I hope I was able to at least provide some motivation to "turn our hearts" and take a peek through that window to the past and see "heaven's treasures gathering in store" in our collective future.
This song has also been well-received in some other opportunities where I have been able to share it.  I have since created a simple video for YouTube that is linked above.

A Window To The Past
By Michael D. Squires

A whispered voice, almost missed,
Not perceived for the demands of here and now,
from the past, piercing thru the dark.
We turn our hearts, turn our minds,
And we find there a window to the past,
a breath of life, that ignites in us a spark.

And we sense their great pleasure
as their stories unfold
And doors open wider
to glories untold
As we watch thru a window to the past

Beyond the veil, loved ones wait
For the chance to help us see their lives
And heaven’s treasures gathering in store.
We turn our hearts, turn our minds,
And we find there a window to the past,
And they wait at the threshold of heaven’s door

We seek to find them, to know them,
To serve them faithful and bold;
And doors open wider
To glories untold,
as we watch thru a window to the past.

Maybe they see us, they know us,
They've served us faithful and bold;
And doors open wider
To glories untold,
as we watch thru a window to the past.

And we’re blessed thru a window to the past.
