These Eyes

I remember sitting in a church meeting some time years ago and writing some words inside the front flap of my Elders Quorum manual.  I was struck by the current condition of the world compared with how I envisioned it could be when I closed my eyes.  I remember thinking that with the reference to my eyes, I could be on to something, creatively speaking.  I really don’t know if this final version of the song used any of those first lyrics in my lesson manual, but that is when the idea originated.  At some point, I developed some limited accompaniment that stuck along with a few words here and there.  In another church meeting, a speaker mentioned something about stirring the hearts of men, and that stuck in my mind.  This song was literally pieced together over the course of years, but the real message part didn’t come together until some time in late 2005.  I always kind of knew what I wanted the final message to be, but I struggled with how to develop it.  Finally, I decided to use some different chords that perhaps sound like they don’t belong in order to bridge the hopeless depressing world to the positive blast of hope and faith at the end.  This seemed to complete it for me.  I have found that it’s okay to close our eyes and dream of how the world should be, as long as when we open them we are consistently working to make it that way.

By Michael D. Squires

These eyes have seen such heartache

In a world that seems so lost;

The attacks on home and family,

Can you tell me what’s the cost?

But when I close these eyes

I can see forever.

I see my dreams come true

And everything looks better.

I see a world revived, a race survived,

Living peaceful, happy lives…

When I close these eyes.

Nations hating nations;

The hearts of men are stirred;

I see a lack of understanding,

And my vision’s becoming blurred.

But when I close these eyes

I can see forever.

I see my dreams come true

And everything looks better.

I see a world revived, a race survived,

Living peaceful, happy lives…

When I close these eyes.

These eyes now look at my life

My reflection in the mirror

Then these eyes are lifted upward,

“What is my purpose here?”

Then the storm clouds seem to part,

And these eyes see the mountain that must be climbed.

It may seem a daunting destiny,

But it can be conquered one step at a time.

So these eyes have gained perspective

As I look around me now,

Yes the problems still fill my vision

But they’re smaller now somehow

You see, I know I can make a difference,

I can play a part that’s just for me.

I can let my light shine out there…

So that other eyes may see.

So I won’t close these eyes

And I will do my part

I’ll see my dreams come true,

I’ll serve with all my heart

I’ll see a world revived, a race survived

Living peaceful, happy lives…

With these eyes open wide.
