Graduation

I almost didn’t graduate from college.  In the summer of 1989, it came down to the final exam in my final class (Advanced Accounting) and I basically had to ace the exam.  I had been married less than a year and we were expecting our first child in December.   I was feeling the pressure, as it seemed that all of my future success and the well-being of my family were hanging on this one test.  I studied and studied.  I made a couple of visits to the office of my professor, mostly to clarify my understanding, but I also wanted to cover my bases just in case mercy from the man that controlled the grades could play any role in the outcome.  He agreed to call me as soon as he had the results so that I wouldn’t have to wait for the report cards to come out.  When I wasn’t studying for the exam, I was praying about it.  Finally, the day came and I really felt prepared.  I arrived for the exam and found that the air conditioning was not working in the building that day (August in Tempe, Arizona).  This threw me off a little, but I tried not to let it affect me and I went to work.  I finished before the end of class and even had time to go check some of my answers.  I felt that I had done well – but would it be enough?  I don’t remember how long it was between the test and the phone call, but I believe it was a Sunday evening when my professor called me at home and gave me the wonderful news.  I do not remember the words that he said, but I can still feel the relief, the burdensome weight being lifted from my shoulders.  From my viewpoint, my family and I were saved.  Soon after the phone call, I sat down at the piano and this is the music that came out to express the amazement, the relief, and the gratitude of that moment.
